MMS Presents BP Amoco Conservation Award

August 26, 1999

The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has selected BP Amoco Gulf of Mexico Offshore as the 1999 recipient of the Conservation Award for Respecting the Environment (CARE Award). The award was presented to David F. Work, Regional President, Houston, BP Amoco by MMS Director Walt Rosenbusch in New Orleans yesterday.

BP Amoco Gulf of Mexico Offshore is being commended for outstanding commitment to environmental performance throughout its offshore operations; innovation in the methods and procedures adopted to assess, monitor, and report on the goals and progress of its Environmental Management System; the leadership and cooperation demonstrated in hosting valuable scientific research on several offshore facilities; and for exceptional efforts to establish and promote progressive dialogue between environmental groups and the offshore oil and gas industry.

Rosenbusch cited several examples of BP Amoco's accomplishments, including:

  • Commitment to independent review of its offshore Environmental Management System under international environmental standards with public disclosure of its annual record of Gulf of Mexico environmental performance.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement in environmental performance by setting and achieving emission reduction goals that exceed regulatory requirements, and by identifying ways to conserve fuel and reduce discharges and waste from drilling, production, and general platform operations.
  • Providing transportation, lodging, food, and platform space on two production platforms to support LSU researchers evaluating the effects of offshore structures on transgulf neotropical bird migrants, and expanding similar commitments for ongoing fisheries and marine mammal studies on other offshore structures.
  • Sponsoring an annual, public, executive level forum focused on the discussion of major environmental issues.

MMS commended BP Amoco Gulf of Mexico Offshore and its employees for an exceptional commitment to environmental performance, an unusual willingness to open operations to public disclosure, and for building credibility with stakeholders.

The CARE Award, established in 1987 and presented annually by the MMS Gulf of Mexico OCS Region, was designed to recognize and commend outstanding actions and accomplishments by those private companies engaged in offshore energy development and that support the broader conservation and environmental goals of the Department of the Interior, coastal states, and the nation.
